Dozens of eager kids stampeded through the new gym on Monday during Cleveland Community Education’s annual Easter egg hunt.
Within 30 seconds, the kids snatched up most of the hundreds of the plastic eggs, which were scattered across the gym floor.
The gym was divided into sections for kids from preschool and younger to sixth. Kids hoped they found an egg with a winning ticket. That meant a big prize, but every kid could take home a bucket of smaller items.
Before the hunt, the Church of Christ put on a carnival in the commons. There, the kids could play games and pose for a photo with the Easter bunny.
“Ellen Dickie from there reached out,” said Community Education Coordinator Rich Kern. “I’m always looking for community involvement. HomeTown Bank sponsored some of the prizes this year, so I appreciate the help from them.”
Because new life emerges when a chick hatches, the egg is widely used as a symbol of renewal. In celebrations of spring, the egg symbolizes the earth’s rebirth. The egg was adopted by early Christians as a symbol of the resurrected Christ emerging from the tomb, and the egg hunt symbolizes the hunt for the tomb and the joy the women had when they found Jesus was no longer there.
Egg bowling, hosted by the Church of Christ, was one of the activities in the commons.

Rich Kern estimated about 100 kids participated in the egg hunt.
The kids brought the eggs to NHS members Savannah Meyer, Samantha Baker and Carter Kern, who opened them to see if they contained a winning ticket.
