Savannah Meyer

As the anchor in the sprint medley, Savannah Meyer ran 800 meters and crossed the finish line  in first place last (Tuesday) night during the Mankato Loyola/Cleveland track team’s season-opening meet.

It was one of four gold finishes for the Crusaders in the Minnesota State University, Mankato field house and helped the host Crusader girls edge St. Clair/Immanuel Lutheran to take second place. Waseca ran away with the five-team meet.

Meyer, a sophomore, took the baton from teammate Maddie Hurias (above), who led the third leg, for a total time of 4:54.36, almost 4 seconds ahead of second place St. Clair/Immanuel Lutheran.

In the girls high jump, Kylie Kolars took first place with a jump of 4-10.00 and Lauren Yenish took second place with a jump of 4-8.00. Kolars also won the long jump competition with a leap of 15-03.5.

The only win for the boys was the 4x800 team of James Younge, Sam Vetter, Corbin Diechman and Carter Zimmerman. They had a 9:40.28 finish.

Meyer also led off in the third place 4x400 relay team, which also included Audrey Westman, Raegan Tiegs and Enara Aquiriano. Their time was 5:13.21, 23 seconds behind winner St. James area.

With a 200-yard sprint, Henry Strobel led off the boys sprint medley. His brother Nathan Strobel anchored that race, and with a time of 4:18.65, the Crusaders, with Simon Morgan and Nick Huisken in the middle, came in second. Minnesota Valley Lutheran’s winning time was 4:07.76.

With a 5:41.93 finish, sophomore TJ Waldron took sixth place in the boys 1600. He was 7 seconds behind the winner from MVL.

Waldron also was eighth in the 800 M (2.34.86). Freshman Elijah Mons was sixth in that race (2:30.35), and Nathan Strobel was fifth (2:28.88). SJA’s winning time was 2:13.55.

Taking a handoff from Nick Huisken, Henry Strobel ran the second leg of the third-place 4x400. Zimmerman ran the third leg, and Younge crossed the finish line at the 4:11.15 mark. SJA’s winning time was 3:44.57.

With a 27-07 leap, Mons was 12th in the triple jump.

The Crusader boys and girls return to the field house next Monday for the conference indoor meet.
