Cheyenne Lotspeich set

In their first road trip of 2023, the C-squad volleyball girls topped JWP 2-0 on Tuesday.

A Sajen Grandaw kill put the Clippers up 4-3 in game one. Eighth grader Valentina Rohlfing, in her first game on C squad, went on the attack to tie the game 5-5.

Later, Amelia Chmiel found some open floor with an ace tip, but with a kill, an ace serve and three Clipper errors, the Bulldogs went on a five-point spurt to take an 11-7 lead.

The Clippers didn’t get rattled though. Jocelyn Kortuem, also an eighth grader in her first C game, swung for a winner. After Katelyn Flowers pushed a return deep that the Bulldogs couldn’t handle and Rohlfing struck for another kill, the Clippers led 15-13.

From there, Nina Lassiter stretched for an ace tip, Luci Blaschko, also an eighth grader in her fist C game, dished up an ace, and Rohlfing uncoiled a hit for a winner. With a couple of JWP errors in the mix, the Clippers led 20-15.

The Bulldogs hung around though, spurting for three-points before losing a hit out of bounds. But they pulled within a point, 21-20, after scoring the next two.

Flowers’ underhand return found a vacant spot through, and she followed up with a kill to give the Clippers some breathing room. JWP errored on the next point before hitting a winner, but the game ended 25-21 when a Bulldog hit got caught in the webbing.

Madison Wollschlager’s ace serve was the first Cleveland winner in game two and put the Clippers in front 3-2. With an Anna Lamont kill and back-to-back Blaschko service aces, the Clippers led 6-3.

With a pair of kills and some Clipper miscues, the Bulldogs won six of the next eight points for a 9-8 advantage, but after the game knotted 9-9 on a JWP hit out of bounds, Rohlfing airmailed a trio of ace serves, and the Clippers never looked back.

With winners coming from a Liviana Lee kill, a pair of Kortuem service aces and a Lamont kill, the Clippers led 21-12 before the Bulldogs errored on the last four points for a 25-13 Clipper triumph.

The C girls will host Mountain Lake on Tuesday, September 5.
