Lilly Lamont set

Finishing their season on a high note after being swept by Alden Conger, the JV Clipper girls came back to beat visiting Wabasso 2-1 on October 17.

Before that, the host Clippers easily downed Le Sueur-Henderson.

Late in game one against Wabasso, a pair of Taylor McCabe kills pulled the Clippers within two, 21-19, but they hit the net to give up the next point, and the Rabbits tipped over an ace, served and ace and swung for a kill for a 25-19 victory.

After Wabasso went up 3-0 in game two, neither team strung more than two-points together until, down 16-13, the Clippers took advantage of three Rabbit hits out of bounds and a line infraction to pull in front 17-16.

Wabasso scored on a kill to take the next point but got caught in the net after their following serve. The Clippers’ ensuing serve didn’t get over the netting, and the Rabbits followed up with a kill and an ace serve for a 20-18 advantage before serving into the webbing.

But with the match on the line, the Clippers didn’t surrender.

Mariah McCabe’s back-row kill deadlocked the game at 20. Wabasso hit the ball out of bounds twice, and Taylor McCabe batted down a kill for a 23-20 Clipper plus. The Rabbits scored the next two points on Clipper miscues, but after Taylor McCabe spiked another winner, the game ended 25-22 when the Rabbits got contacted the mesh.

Kiera Schippers’s kill was the first point in the rubber game. She followed up with an ace tip, and the Rabbit contacted the net and crossed over the midline after that to put the Clippers out front 4-0.

After Lucy Blaschko sent over a winner from the back row and Maile Misner posted an ace block, the Clippers lead 10-2. Down 11-3, the Rabbits took advantage of a hit and three Clipper errors to narrow their deficit, but down the stretch, Meisner served up an ace, Jocelyn Kortuem found a spot of open floor, and the game ended 15-9 on a Meisner ace tip.

Taylor McCabe had four kills while her sister Lacey McCabe had three kills. Schipper had two kills as did Addi Holden. Maile Meissner stretched for a pair of ace blocks.

Blaschko scooped 10 digs. Kortuem had seven set assists, eight digs and landed all eight of her serves with a pair of them for points. Lilly Lamont (above) set up five points.

The Giants came to town on October 9 but weren’t much trouble for the Clippers.

Up 19-10, the Clippers scored the final six points of game one. Schipper’s kill was point 20, Taylor Wolf served an ace for point 23, and the game ended 25-10 after a Flowers attack.

The Giants scored the first four points of game two, all on Clipper errors, but Delaney Thompson pushed over a winner for the start of a six-point run that also featured kills by Taylor McCabe and Holden.

The Giants won the next three points for a 7-6 advantage, but Holden’s kill knotted the game 7-7, and the Clippers never trailed from there. The game ended 25-14 on a Schipper kill.

Another kill by Schipper was the start of game three. After a 2-2 tie, Flowers, Evelyn Keltgen and Meisner kills were included in a six-point run that put the Clippers in front 8-2. From there, Meissner batted down and then tipped over winners for back-to-back Clipper points. After a Taylor McCabe kill, the game timed out with the Clippers in front 17-8.

Holden led the offense with seven kills. Anika Sathoff had six kills. Taylor McCabe had five kills. Schipper had three kills. Flowers had a pair of kills as did Meissner, Thompson and Keltgen.

Thompson set up 15 points. Kortuem assisted on five points. Blaschko had 10 digs. Sathoff, Thompson and Taylor McCabe each had five digs.

Thompson was 20 for 20 from the service stripe with a pair of aces. Kortuem was four for four in serving.
