Unable to penetrate Mankato East’s suffocating defense, the Minnesota River Bulldog girls fell 4-0 in their season opener on Friday in Le Sueur.

The Cougars scored a short-handed goal at the 6:21 mark in the first period, but the Bulldogs went into their locker room feeling pretty good about their performance.

Two quick East goals early in the second period dampened their spirt though. A breakaway goal with six minutes left in the third frame widened the Cougar lead.

On pair of power plays in the first period and again in the third, the Bulldogs had their chances but couldn’t cash in.

The Bulldog girls are back in action on Tuesday when they host Rochester Mayo. On Thursday they travel to New Ulm.

Last year, the Bulldogs finished with a 12-11 record.
