Sam Ternes with the ball

Alex Kortuem bagged a quartet of three-point baskets, all in the first half, Braeden Smith added a steady dose of buckets from the floor, and the C-squad boys took down visiting Martin County West 46-31.

It was the first of a trifecta of wins on Monday.

Charlie Perkins, Smith and Kortuem teamed up for the Clippers’ first seven points. Kortuem’s second three put the Clippers in front 10-9. After a Mason Kluntz free basket, the Mavericks deadlocked the contest at 11, but Sam Ternes’s running jumper fell through the mesh, and the Clippers never trailed from there.

After Kortuem’s third three, Smith scored on a turnaround jumper. Kortuem dropped in another three, and Smith scored from near the basket. After a Tanner Simonette bucket, the Clippers were in front 26-19 at the break.

Kluntz went to work in the second half with seven points while Smith put in three more baskets from the floor. Nathan Brink added a three, and Ternes contributed another two. Kasyn Zuehlke’s two-point basket closed out the Clipper scoring.

Kortuem and Smith each scored a dozen points. Kluntz had nine points. Ternes added four points, and Brink tallied three points. Simonette, Perkins and Zuehlke each chipped in two points.

The Clippers were three of eight from the foul line. MCW put in a pair of threes and was five of eight in foul shooting.

The C boys have a chance to avenge a season-opening loss when they host Madelia tonight (Thursday).
