Delaney Thompson drive

Downing host Madelia on Friday, the B girls picked up their first victory of the season.

The Blackhawks won the jump and scored, but Delaney Thompson (above) went to work right away, scoring inside and then across the three-point line for a 5-2 Clipper advantage.

After Madelia tied the game with a three, Mollie Bowman was successful on both halves of two foul shots, and then Keira Schipper grabbed an offensive rebound and scored, Thompson put in two free shots, and Taylor McCabe jetted in a three from the corner.

Madelia posted a shot from the floor, but after a Kaitlyn Flowers three, the Clippers were in front 17-7.

McCabe put in a jumper and then she and Thompson stole and scored. The two each scored another basket, and, with Thompson, McCabe and Bowman scheduled to sit out the second half, the Clippers led 29-10 lead at the break.

The remaining Clippers didn’t slip though. A Flowers layup was the first basket of the second frame. Samantha Baker spun for a bucket, and Schipper scored twice to put her team in front 38-12.

Schipper and Taylor Wolf each put in a free throw, and Valentina Rohlfing sunk two to pad the Clipper lead. Later, Ava Kluntz dropped in two-pointer from the perimeter, Jocelyn Kortuem made a free throw, and Rohlfing grabbed her own rebound and tossed it up for the final Clipper basket.

Thompson led the Clippers with 13 points in one half played. Also in one half, McCabe added nine points. Bowman scored two points in one half. All three were saved for the varsity game.

Schipper and Flowers each posted eight points. Rohlfing totaled four points. Baker and Kluntz each contributed two points. Kortuem and Wolf each had one point.

The Clippers made a trio of threes and were 11 of 26 from the foul line. Madelia recorded one three and was nine of 27 in free throw shooting.
