First surpassing school records from years past and now breaking their own…and each other’s, Savannah Meyer (right), a senior, and her sister Charlotte Meyer (left), an eighth grader, are having a banner year as distance runners on the Loyola/Cleveland track team.
With a 5:23.55 second-place finish in Blooming Prairie on Tuesday, Savannah broke the 1600-m Cleveland record previously held by Charlotte: 5:24.07, which the younger Meyer set at the conference meet last year when she surpassed Emily Phillips’ 2008 record of 5:26.6.
Meanwhile, with an 11:13.60 first-place finish, Charlotte broke the 3200-m Cleveland record previously held by herself. With a time of 11:24.12 in St. James on April 8th, she had surpassed Phillips’ 11:25.3 mark, which was also set in 2008.
While there is sibling rivalry, it pushes them to both run faster, said Savannah, who typically focused on the 800 last year but ran the 1600 as well.
“Even in practice, we are always trying to beat each other. There’s always competition.”
And while Charlotte will have her sites on regaining the 1600 school record, it doesn’t matter to Savannah.
“I will just try to beat it again.”
