After falling 10-0 to visiting Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton in game one on Tuesday, the U12 girls bounced back to edge the Bulldogs 4-3 in game two.
With a pair of runs in the first, the Bulldogs got off to an early start in the second half of the double header. They came on a dropped third strike and a pair of singles to load the bases. One run scored on a steal home and the other scored on a single.
But the Clippers quickly took the lead. Khloe McCabe led off the bottom of the first with a single and stole second. McCabe got caught stealing third, but Blair Voit , and Bri Groebner and Olivia Olson walked to fill the bases. Voit, Groebner and Olson all stole home to put the Clippers in front 3-2.
The Clippers added a run they would end up needing in the second. Eva Schummer walked, advanced to second on a Charlie Gair ground out, to third on a Kennedy Schleeve ground out and scored on a McCabe single.
On a single with two steals tacked on and an RBI single, JWP scored a run in the third to pull within one 4-3, but that that was it for the scoring, and the Clippers held on for the triumph.
JWP outhit the Bulldogs six to three. McCabe hit two singles, and Voit hit a double. The Clippers walked five times and struck out five times. They left three runners on base.
Voit went all five innings. She struck out 11, five looking, and walked none. The Clippers stranded four runners.
The Clippers didn’t get a hit in game one and only got on base one time: a Voit walk. They struck out 11 times and walked once. Groebner went three and two thirds innings before the 10-run rule went into effect. She allowed 10 hits while walking four and striking out six. Neither team errored.
The Clippers went on to go three for four in a tournament the following Saturday. They beat the Mankato Peppers 8-0, Waseca 5-4, JWP 7-1 but then lost to the same Bulldog team 6-3.
Earlier in the season, the U12 Clippers, who are coached by Misty Voit and Josh Groebner, beat the Peppers 10-3 and fell to St. Peter 14-0, 9-4. Looking to improve their 5-4 record, they return to action tonight when they host Maple River at 6:00 p.m.
