Scoring three runs in the top of the fifth the 12U “Sandhurst” girls deadlock game two against visiting Albert Lea 5-5 on Thursday.

So, after winning game one 5-0, they were hoping to escape with a tie, and they got that when Breanna Bosse struck out the side one, two-three.

It was a solid way for the Clippers to end their regular season. With a 21-8-1 record, they take on Delano in Rochester today (Saturday) in the first round of the state tournament, which continues on Sunday. 

With the Clippers trailing the Tigers 5-2 in game two, Jayda Roemhildt got hit by a pitch. Adli Hoisington swung for a single, and Roemhildt took third on the play before scoring on a passed ball.

Back at the top of the order, Arbor Linder walked, and Hoisington scored on a Lexi Wobbrock infield single. Linder scored on an Addy Hoffmann groundout. With Wobbrock on third, the Clippers were poised to take the lead, but the frame ended on another ground out.

After a dropped third strike, Albert Lea scored in the bottom of the first on a passed ball. They went in front 2-0 on a walk and a single.

With a pair of runs in the top of the second, the Clippers didn’t waste any time tying the game though. Leading off, Kenzie Sandhurst walked, stoke second and scored on a Roemhildt single. Roemhildt stole second and third and scored on a passed ball.

The Tigers posted three runs in the fourth on a walk, a single, a double and a passed ball before the Clippers knotted the game 5-5 in the fifth.

Each team had three hits. Wobbrock and Roemhildt each hit a single for an RBI. Hoisington hit a single. The Clippers struck out six times and walked six times. They left two on base.

Bosse tossed the first and last inning. She gave up one hit while walking one and striking out seven. Wobbrock threw the second, third and fourth innings. She allowed two hits, and two walks while striking out four. The Clipper defense stranded two runners on base.

Game one: Clippers 5, Albert Lea 0

The Clippers scored two runs in the first when Hoffmann reached first on a dropped third strike, Bosse walked, and Hoffmann scored when Kenzie Sandhurst reached first on a wild pitch third strike. Bosse also scored on the play, and the Clippers led 2-0.

Three more orange & black runs came in the third when Hoisington, Hoffmann and Bosse each walked and stole their way home.

The Clippers didn’t have a single hit. Albert Lea had one hit. Sandhurst collected two RBIs. The Clippers walked five times and struck out 11 times. They left two on base.

Bosse struck out all three runners she faced in the first inning before handing the circle over to Roemhildt for the next three innings.

Striking out nine and walking none, Roemhildt tossed a gem.  Back in for the final inning, Bosse struck out two and gave up a double—the only Albert Lea player to get on base—before the game ended on a ground out.
