With a 19:08 finish, to-be freshman Charlotte Meyer was the top female and ninth overall at Madison Lake’s Paddlefish Day’s Patrick Freeberg Memorial 5K Fun Run on July 26.
Seven days later, a thousand miles west of Madison Lake and three quarters of a mile higher in elevation, Meyer competed in the Sweat Pea 5K run in Bozeman, Montana. There, she was first among the 31 runners in her female 13-15 age group, second among all females and 20th overall of 523 participants.
Along with her sister Savannah Meyer (CHS 2025), Meyer represented one of three generations of her family running in Madison Lake. Her mom, sixth grade teacher Bree Meyer, was 55th overall with a 29:39.6 while her grandmother Becky Meyer was 65th with a 22:42. Savannah was 27th with a 22:55. The winning time among the 108 participants was 16:12.
Also running the Patrick Freeberg Memorial, freshman Reece Nelson was 11th with a 20:04 while fifth grader Liam Baker was 57th with a 30:35.
Band teacher Erik Hermanson and his son Zak ran side by side and finished with a 27:48 for 46th place and a 27:54 for 47th place respectively. It was the fourth time they have ran the race.
Bryce Omtvedt (CHS 2013) was fifth with an 18:18 finish. His mother, Rhonda Omtvedt came in 52nd with a 28:16 finish. Sydnee (Germscheid) Omtvedt (CHS 2020) was 72nd with a 37:02. Running alongside her, husband Brett Omtvedt (CHS 2020) finished in 73rd with a 37:03.
The Patrick Freeberg Memorial event is a scenic 5K Run/Walk in honor of Patrick Freeberg, a local athlete whose life tragically ended in 2010 in Norfolk, Virginia while serving in the US Navy, is a chip timed event with a challenging course around the lake.
The Sweat Pea Run is hosted by the Big Sky Wind Drinkers (running club) and is one of the oldest running races in Bozeman. Also a chip-timed race, it's held the weekend of the Sweet Pea Festival of the Arts as a liaison event. The course is a mix of road and trail with a start and finish on the city’s main street.
