Blair Voit dribbling

With the younger junior high girls won their opener 10-4 against visiting Martin County West on Monday, the older girls, eighth graders with a few seventh graders mixed in, fell to the Mavericks 25-10.

Blair Voit parked a jumper for the first basket of game one. Later, Voit connected with Emmy Miller, who, perched just in front of the foul line, plopped in a basket for a 4-0 Clipper lead.

The Clippers had trouble hanging on to the ball throughout the half, but the defense kept MCW at bay, and they maintained the 4-0 lead at the break.

Brylee Kortuem circled into the lane for a layup that was the first basket of the second half. Later, the Mavericks managed a basket, but Bella Baker grabbed an offensive rebound and scored, and Voit pounded in a layup to put the finishing touches on the triumph.

The Mavericks were in front 5-0 in game two before Kenzie Kortuem scored on a layup and followed it up with a jumper from the baseline to pull the Clippers within one.

But the Mavericks scored the next eight points, half of them on steals. Brylee Kortuem put in a layup to stop the run, but the Clippers trailed 13-6 at the break.

The Mavericks scored the first six points of the second half. Anistyn Dauk’s jumper halted the rally, but a Kortuem steal and ensuing layup was the only other Clipper basket. Meanwhile, the Mavericks ran in three layups to tag and bag the win.

Coached by Rennardo Lampley, who has done some off-season work with the varsity Clipper boys, the junior high Clippers return to action Today (Tuesday) when they host St. Clair at 4:30 p.m.
