Seniors David Draheim and Anna Kawatski-Klein ended their high school golf careers at the Section 2AA meet last week. The tournament was held at the New Prague Country Club.
Jackson Wille, a sophomore, was also one of the six LeSueur-Henderson/Cleveland boys team members competing.
Members of the top four teams and individuals for both boys and girls who made the cut advanced to a second round.
All over the cut, which was 80 for the boys and 92 for the girls, Draheim scored an 86 and Wille shot a 90 on Tuesday, and Kawatski-Klein shot a 102 on Wednesday. Par for the course is 71.
Six boy golfers and six girls make up a team with the top four scores determining the team total. Neither the LeSueur-Henderson/Cleveland boys nor girls team made the top four to advance to the second round of section play. As individuals, Addison Fahey and Nathan Tews did make the cut, but despite solid performances on the second day of action, neither made the cut to go on to the state meet with Fahey finishing 16th and Tews in the 13th spot.
Usually shooting in the 90s, Draheim had a great senior year, said head coach Stephen Ibanez. He shot his personal best at a tournament in Terrace View. He was the team’s captain.
“He is one of those who anything I give to him he has gone to it,” Ibanez said. “His swing has really improved this year. Jackson is the same. They are both very good.”
Kawatski-Klein, the girls’ team captain, was among the foursome that won the conference, which was held at the New Ulm Country Club on May 11. Outside of practice, she took lessons this year, which improved her swing, said Ibanez.
“She has a personality to be good golfer. She has been doing great.”
Other Cleveland members on the varsity teams were Luke Heldberg, Bryce Pettit, Zayden Linder and Zander Linder. On the junior high team were Bo Kortuem, Marvin Oldridge and Mackenzie Borer.
Ian Krenik (CHS 2019), is the assistant coach.
