Kaylee Karels

The Clippers girls couldn’t hold onto the magic of their season opener and fell 57-31 to Martin County West in Trimont on Monday.

Turnovers and patience on offense made the difference, said head coach Joe Remiger.

“We went down court and just threw up the ball.”

Macey Ziebarth scored a three right off the jump. Emily Kern took a Laci Hollerich assist for an inside basket, and with a Ziebarth basket from the floor, the Clippers led 7-2.

The Mavericks—who lost to Nicollet/Loyola by 12, the team the Clipper beat in the season opener—went on an eight-point spurt, but another Ziebarth basket from three-point land knotted the game at 10. The Clippers took a brief lead when Kern took an in-bounds pass up and in, and later Kaylee Karels (above) looped in a three to put Cleveland up 17-15.

But MCW pulled away after that for a 25-19 advantage at the interlude.

Ziebarth scored a two and a three in the second half, and Karels drove in a couple baskets, but overall it was turnover city, and the Mavericks cruised to the victory.

Ziebarth led the effort with 20 points. She had a trio of threes and was five of eight from the free-throw line. Karels had seven points. Kern was limited to four points.

The 1-1 Clippers take on Truman/Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain in Granada on Thursday. T/ML/GHEC, 2-0, beat Nicollet/Loyola and JWP.
