Brenna McCarthy hit

Losing the momentum that tied their match 1-1, the Clipper B girls’ rally down the stretch in the rubber game fell short, and they fell to host Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton 2-1  on Tuesday.

“Our focus needs to be on making big hands and big blocks,” said coach Bree Meyer.

Down 19-12 in game one, Cleveland scored four of the next five points, one a winner off the hands of sophomore hitter Kamryn Lindsay.

But the Bulldogs won four of the next five. Addi Holden’s kill was the last point for the Clippers, and they fell 25-18.

In a streak only broken up by a Brenna McCarthy (above) kill, the Bulldogs scored eight of the next nine pints to pull in front 22-19, but it was all Clippers after that, including a couple of Lilly Lamont ace serves and a Holden ace tip. The game ended 25-22 when a Bulldog hit tangled in the webbing.

Down 2-0 in the rubber game, Mariah McCabe’s push from the back row found an open spot on the JWP side of the floor for the Clipper’s first point.

But it was flub city after that for the orange & black, and they quickly trailed 10-3 before Holden scored on a tip.

The Clippers never rolled over though. With her team down 12-5, Holden scored on an ace block. JWP hit into the net to add another Clipper point but responded with a kill.

Kills by McCarthy were the bookends of a five-point Clipper spurt that pulled them within one of tying, but the Clippers next serve went out of bounds, and they lost 15-12 when they were cited for a carry.

Despite the loss, Meyer was pleased with the overall effort.

“I thought Brenna and Addi did a great job tonight, and we really came together as a team” Meyer said.

Earlier, the C-squad lost their first game but won their second and third.

Some of the B-girls will return to the court as members of the JV team when the Clippers take on Mountain Lake Area in Comfrey on Tuesday.
