Mariah McCabe dig

Rosters between the B-Squad and JV volleyball overlap, but together, the two teams took to the Clipper floor on Tuesday and downed Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman 2-1.

Lacey McCabe pushed a winner for the first point of game one. Sophie Perkins followed with an ace serve, and Jocelyn Bartell swatted down a hit for a quick 3-0 Clipper lead.

The Jags took a point when a Clipper hit flew over the border, but the next six points went to Cleveland and featured another Bartell kill and a kill from Melia Sathoff.

The Clippers only gave up points sporadically after that, and, after Sathoff bumped the ball  to an open spot on the Jaguar side of the court, the game ended 25-16 when the Jaguars sent a hit into the grid.

With the B squad on the floor, the lead in game two swung back and forth. A McCabe ace serve was the first winner for the Clippers. They led 3-1 when the Jags hit into the webbing.

Later, after a Mariah McCabe kill, the Clippers went up front 12-8 and then 15-9 on a Brenna McCarthy attack.

But the Jags took control after that, tying the game at 17 after a Clipper hit landed in foul territory. Down the stretch, Sathoff, Lacey McCabe and McCarthy scored on kills, but the Jaguars won 25-21 on a Clipper serve that flew out of bounds.

Bartell’s kill was the first winner in the rubber game and put the Clippers up 3-2. They served into the net after that, but sided out when the Jags errored, and then Addi Holden swatted a kill, and Cassandra Connor lasered an ace serve in a five-point Clipper run that put them up 8-3.

Lilly Lamont served up an ace, and Sathoff pushed the ball into an open slot and dropped down a kill to put the Clippers up 12-6. With a Lacey McCabe ace tip, the Clippers were within a point of a victory, but the Jaguars came up with two kills and an ace serve to extend the game before Holden smashed a hit across the court for the 15-11 Clipper win.

Sathoff led the attackers with seven kills. Lacey McCabe squashed six kills and scooped nine digs. Bartell smashed down three kills. Perkins set up nine assists. Lamont had eight assists.

Off on Thursday, the JV girls pick up on Saturday with a tournament at the Montgomery middle school starting at 9:00 am.
