With 24 points, eighth grader Morgan Mathiowetz led Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s to a 68-23 win over the Clipper varsity girls on Saturday, the second day of the Knights’ Thanksgiving tournament.

While the Clippers didn’t make any large strides, head coach Joe Remiger said they did improve from 18 hours earlier when they got beat up by Sleepy Eye.

“Our communication improved; our V-cutting got better. Defensively, their 54 is big, but Micah (Peterson) (with the ball above) did a good job down there.”

The Knights took the jump ball in for a layup to open the scoring. Kaylee Karels, who led the Clippers with eight points, drove in for a layup after a steal for the first Clipper basket and a 5-2 score.

Still early in the first half, Ava Hahn sunk a pair of free throws and sister Greta Hahn stole and drove from coast to coast for a layup, but the Clippers still trailed by five, 11-6.

Karels sunk a three in the half as did Addi Holden. With a sis assist, Ava Hahn put in a jumper from the paint for the last Clipper basket of the frame, and Cleveland trailed 43-17 at the intermission.

Karels scored on a jumper for the first Clipper points of the second half, but the Knights went on a scoring binge after that for the next 19 points before Greta Hahn scored on a layup. Lacey McCabe made a free throw for the last point of the game.

Karels put in a three, a pair of twos and a free throw. Ava Hahn had for points. Greta Hahn scored two points.  McCabe made a trio of freebies for three total points. Holden had three points.

The Knights made six three pointers and were eight of 12 from the foul line. The Clippers made six of 13 free throws.
