Greta Hahn three-point shot

While the varsity girls got plenty of shots off, not enough fell through the net in a 59-54 loss to visiting Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther on Friday.

“Their hearts were in it; they wanted to win the game,” said head coach Joe Remiger, “but we had a lot of shots that didn’t go in.”

The Jaguars led 27-21 at the break, but the Clippers came out with the first five points of the second half: a Sarena Remiger inside basket after an offensive rebound and a Greta Hahn drive for a basket that she followed up with a three-pointer (above).

The Jaguars—who beat the traveling Clippers without Remiger on the floor 46-41 earlier in the season—put in a couple of free shots, but Kaylee Karels grabbed an offensive rebound and scored to deadlock the game at 30.

The Jaguars responded with a pair of threes and a basket from the floor for an eight-point spurt that Ava Hahn broke up with a three from the corner. With a Remiger steal to gain possession, Greta Hahn canned another three, and Remiger hit a free throw after an Ava Hahn steal, and the Clippers narrowed their deficit to a basket.

With 10 minutes to go, the Clippers tied the game at 39 when Remiger swung a ball going out of bounds back to Ava Hahn, who put it up and in. The Jaguars scored from inside, but Karels arced in a three and then assisted Remiger for a basket for a 44-41 Clipper advantage. The Jags posted the next six points, but Karels hit a three to tie the game at 47.

But the Jags surged again, this time for seven-straight points and a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

Karels rebounded and scored, Remiger made a trio of free shots and Ava Hahn put in a layup, but the Jags went into the stall and made free throws to hang on for a win.

Greta Hahn led the effort with 17 points, nine of them coming from three-point country. Karels had 16 points, six of them from across the arc. Remiger had a dozen points. Ava Hahn had a three and a pair of baskets from the floor for seven points. Lacey McCabe had two points off the bench.

The Clippers made eight of 12 foul shots. The Jaguars also made six three pointers and were seven of 13 in free-throw shooting.

Earlier in the evening, after leading 17-14 at the break, the B-Squad girls fell to the Jaguars 43-30.

Addi Holden and Delaney Thompson each had a three in the first half. Thompson and McCabe also put in a pair of two-point buckets.

Sam Wondra scored a two and a three in the second half, and Thompson added another pair of baskets from the floor, but the Jaguars outscored the Clippers 29-13.

Thompson led the effort with 11 points. McCabe, who only played in the first half, had five points. Wondra and Holden also each had five points. Taylor McCabe and Mollie Bowman each had a two-point basket.

The Clippers made one of four free-throw attempts. The Jags put in one three pointer and were eight of 14 from the foul line.

The varsity girls travel to Alden today (Monday) for a 6:00 pm game.
