Dee Schuttloffel Memorial Scholarship Mrs. Dee Shuttlofefel was an imperative member of the food service staff at Cleveland Public School and member of the Cleveland community until her sudden passing on Thursday, November 24 th , 2022. Dee was a loving mother, grandmother, friend, and co-worker. Dee loved a great cup of coffee and a few games of cribbage before starting her days here at Cleveland Public School. She loved being a fellow “lunch lady” and would ALWAYS come to work with a smile on her face with her question of the day being, “how’s it going sweetie” or “how are the darlings (referring to you – kids – today?” She was a huge Readers Digest fan and would have a word of the day for us. She wanted to know all of your names and knew each of you graduates and those sitting in the audience. Dee was a huge fan of the individuals that say thank you, even though she didn’t have her hearing aids in half the time to hear you say it in return. So she’d just nod and smile back regardless. Her favorite quote, “we do not remember days, we remember moments.” When it was snowing or icy, she would say the Minnesota shuffle on her way to and from school. Her favorite saying when asked what she was doing this weekend: “Big doings” – meaning going to see family or friends. She once pulled over on the side of the road to help a turtle cross the road. She texted me that morning and said she’d be a few minutes late – nothing major, just helping a turtle cross the road. This scholarship is for a student that will be continuing their education beyond high school. On Dee’s passing she had this poem hanging on her refrigerator: Ode to the Lunch Lady Teachers come and teachers go, It’s the lunch lady who you get to know. She ladles the gravy, she scoops the peas, You can get an extra scoop if you just say please. Five days a week, the lunch lady is there. Handing you a tray with a pizza square. Although some of the food might look a bit scary, you can rest assured it’s sanitary. The lunch lady serves her food with pride, Even if she’s not sure what’s inside. Chicken nuggets, corn dogs, pudding and pie. Casseroles, medleys and something that’s fried. She fills your plate with a smile and a wink, And reminds you to pick out something to drink. Lunch lady, lunch lady, you’re the diva of the school! The Dee Schuttloffel Memorial Scholarship is given on behalf of Joni Pasbrig Bennett family / families and the Cleveland Public School Lunch Ladies Ed Schultz – 2023 Scholarships given by Frank Weimer to 4 graduating seniors from Cleveland High School attending a 4 year college.
